Print Controllers

There’s no doubt about it... the printed page is moving away from "place the original on the glass" copying and towards the use of digital output devices, such as printers, networked digital copiers and mopiers. Even the copier manufacturers admit that analog copiers will soon be a thing of the past. As more and more output flows over the LAN, it becomes increasingly difficult, but of growing importance, to track those pages. The reasons are numerous... for billing back to customers, for allocating to the appropriate internal department, for collecting immediate payment, or simply to control printing abuse. But how to accomplish this task? Enter HECON®, and the PrintNet™ system.

The PrintNet™ system is a collection of software and hardware that can be combined to create the system you need. Some software runs on client computers and controls printing right at the computer via a special control device called a "print controller". Other software resides on the server, and uses a separate computer with print controller to control the print queue. Still other software runs on the server without the need for a print controller at all.

HECON® makes several different print controllers, as well. Any one of them can be used with any of the software requiring a print controller. This allows the user to create a PrintNet™ system that is comprised of the elements they prefer, to accomplish the job they need done.

As you examine the various elements of the PrintNet™ system, it would be helpful to have some definitions clear.

Workstation Software - Software designed to run on an individual computer which handles the task of releasing print jobs to the print queue. Users print from their application, enable the print controller attached to their computer, and release their job to the print queue.

Print Controllers -  hardware device attached to a computer via the serial port which, coupled with appropriate software, verifies valid users and either collects usage information or payment in some form for the print job being released.
